2016

I was delighted to present  awards at the Asian Voice Event in the Terrace Pavillion at the House of Commons on 10 March 2016. These are always very exciting events and are a way of acknowledging the hard work and enterprise of the awardees, who in many cases have successful lives from often a very humble start. The Awards honour outstanding personalities and celebrate their achievements in their respective fields.

Valerie Vaz: “It is a pleasure to follow the right hon. Member for Basingstoke (Mrs Miller), and I congratulate everyone who is taking part in the debate. I apologise for squeezing a nine-minute speech into four minutes.

At my surgery  I spoke to a constituent who had been a victim of an attempted murder. The criminal had indefinite leave to remain and in my view contributes nothing to this country. It should be a matter for his first country to deal with him. At Justice questions an opportunity came up to ask the Minister to look at this case.

On Monday 7 March 2016, as an elected member of the Panel of Chairs, I chaired a Westminster Hall debate on E-petition 118060 relating to the income threshold for non-EU citizens settling in the UK.
