The UK is the second largest legal services market in the world and the largest legal services sector in the EU. It contributes £27.9 billion to the UK economy and £4.4 billion in net exports. It relies, in part, on uniform market access the EU and the European economic area. What are the Government doing to protect this vital sector?

Following the Government’s defeat on Saturday 19 October 2019, the Leader of the House made a Business Statement on Monday 21 October 2019. Below is my response in full:

Parliament sat on Saturday 19 October 2019 to vote on a motion to approve the Government’s Brexit deal. This was the first time Parliament sat on a Saturday since the Falklands conflict.

On Thursday 17 October 2019, Boris Johnson’s minority Government was defeated for the 9th time. I voted in favour of an amendment to the Business of the House motion that the House shall sit at 9.30am on Saturday 19 October 2019 to debate the Brexit withdrawal agreement.
