Justice Week aims to boost the profile of justice and law in society, placing them at the centre stage of public and political debate. This year, Justice Week focused on helping to build young people’s understanding for the rule of law and increase their understanding of the relationship between their lives, Parliament, the government and the justice system.

I responded to the Government’s Business Statement on Thursday 27 February, highlighting its inaction on health inequalities, flood defences and zero-hour contracts. You can read my speech below: 

A second Opposition Day Debate was held on Tuesday 25 February on social care. Reform to social care is desperately needed: every day last year, 2,000 older people who had approached their local authority for help with social care were turned down. The Government voted against the opposition motion which called for reform; it was defeated by 315 votes to 181. You can read our motion in full below: 

On Tuesday 25 February, the fourth Opposition Day of this Parliament began with a debate on tax avoidance and evasion. The UK is losing £1.3bn in corporation tax to five of the biggest US tech firms each year because the Tories won’t hold them to account. This could pay for 52,000 nurses, provide care home rooms for 42,000 people and almost double school funding in the North East. The Government voted against our motion and it was defeated by 322 votes to 236.
