On Thursday 23 January 2014, Valerie and pupils from Blue Coat Infants School presented a petition at 10 Downing Street, calling on the Prime Minister and other world leaders to ensure that every child around the world has access to an education.
Valerie said:
“This year the focus for the campaign is on the need for teachers. The work the children are presenting was created as part of the ‘Send My Friend to School’ Global Campaign for Education. World leaders promised to get every child into school by 2015. The number of out-of-school children around the world since 2000 has dropped by over 40 million, but 60 million are still missing out on an education.”
“This is a very important cause and I am delighted that the children have decided to campaign on this issue. I hope that the Prime Minister takes note of the messages presented by the children and looks into what further steps the Government can take to promote education for children around the world. Education is the key to sustainable development and empowering people to be able to help themselves. The children have recognised the importance of teachers.”
“The children from Blue Coat Infants School were outstanding when they presented the life size teacher at the door of Number 10 Downing Street. They have shown that they are thinking of other children and helping them beyond their own community .”
