On Friday 9 September 2016, WHG invited me to cut the ribbon to open Cardan Pointe Housing scheme for the over 55s on the Waterfront.
Gary Fulford the Chief Executive of WHG and Cllr Eddie Hughes the Chair of WHG together with the staff and residents gathered in the communal area of this excellent development of 19 1 bed and 25 2 bed flats for over 55 who by the well being scheme has a greater emphasis on sustaining and improving the health and well being of the residents and delay deterioration of long term conditions. The flats are self contained with shower rooms and kitchens and an extra bedroom for some so that family can come and stay. The people I spoke to were absolutely delighted with their flat and the location and said they were very happy.
The scheme has a communal space where residents can sit and chat and there are exercise classes , individual support planning and coordination of additional services with wellbeing officers. I was impressed with the buggy room where all the buggies some bespoke and of a very high standard were stored out of the way. There was also a remembering room. WHG their staff and everyone associated with the project should be delighted that their hard work and vision has paid off.
I cut the ribbon while live music and a barbecue was set up beside the lovely setting of the Canal and with the iconic New Art Gallery and shops within easy reach. The Waterfront has seen great development since I was first elected in 2010 and it is becoming a lively area. I am delighted the first of the schemes, there are 2 others one in Walsall North the other in Aldridge Brownhills which will be opened later, was opened in Walsall South. This provides an excellent integrated health and social care service. The downsizing will free up large family homes.
I saw happy residents of a purpose built block of flats who say their live has changed since moving in. They sit on their balconies watching the lights and one told me the sunset.
