Merrions Wood awarded Green Flag Status

On Friday 14 October 2016 I visited Merrions Wood, which received the prestigious Green Flag Award 2016/17, to raise the green flag. Preb Revd Martin Rutter (Trustee) and Friends Group Committee members, Bob Winkle (chair), Heather Allen and Carrie Rogers.
were present to highlight this award.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, distinguishes Merrions Wood as one of the best parks in the country. Merrions Wood is maintained to the highest possible standards, a recognition it has received since 2011.

The reserve is just three miles from the town centre and boasts a beautiful ground with woodland, grassland and ponds. It is home to a wealth of unique flora and fauna from ferns to fungi and a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate life including woodpeckers, bats and rare bees and wasps.

The Merrions Wood Trust and Walsall Countryside Services have exciting plans for the future of the reserve. There are plans to restore the historic gates at both ends of the reserve, to renovate the nature trail along the northern side of the woodland and to continue to survey the wildlife of the site.
