Universal Credit Debate

Tuesday 6 December saw Parliament have an important debate on the Government’s Universal Credit scheme as it has driven debt, arrears and evictions which has caused real suffering for people acorss the UK.

The Labour Party has forced the Government to publish its own confidential reports into the impact of Universal Credit’s rollout.

The Conservative Government is failing working people. Real wages are lower now than they were in 2010 and in-work poverty is at a record high. Universal Credit is making matters even worse, leading to increased debt, mounting arrears and increased homelessness.

This Conservative Government has attempted to completely ignore Parliament’s vote to pause and fix Universal Credit. The Government must listen and act, before millions of people are made worse off.

A Labour Government will ensure an economy that ends austerity and supports those in work.

The successful motions was a follows:

“That an humble Address be presented to Her Majesty, That she will be graciously pleased to give directions that the five project assessment reviews, carried out into universal credit between 2012 and 2015 by the Government’s Major Projects Authority now known as the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, and any subsequent project assessment reviews carried out into universal credit by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority between 1 January 2016 and 30 November 2017 that have been provided to Her Majesty’s Ministers at the Department for Work and Pensions, be provided by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to the Work and Pensions Committee.”
