On Monday 16 January 2017 Valerie Vaz MP signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Book of Commitment’ in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January 2017.
Valerie Vaz MP said:
“I was pleased to sign the ‘Book of Commitment’ to honour those who were murdered during the Holocaust and pay tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people.”
“Friday 27 January 2017 will mark the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.”
“I was honoured to meet a survivor of the Holocaust in Hungary, John Hajdu, in Parliament in September 2016. John’s experience of life after the Holocaust and as a refugee, which he publicised in his autobiography, tell of the turmoil of post-World War Two Europe. It is through survivors like John and fellow survivor and author, Elie Wiesel, that we can truly gain an insight into the struggles of the Holocaust and life afterwards.”
“There are many ways to get involved in Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) to remember all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The theme for this year is ‘How can life go on?’”
“If you are aged between 14 and 24 you can participate in Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s ‘Youth Champion programme’ and organise HMD activities in your youth group, sports club, community or school. I encourage my constituents to show their support for such a significant day.”
