A Fundraising Dinner was held at Lal Haveli restaurant in Walsall on Sunday 26 June 2022 to raise money for the Valerie Taylor Trust. It was wonderful to meet Valerie and speak to her about her work in Bangladesh helping those who are vulnerable. The guests were delighted that Valerie was there in person.
Valerie is a physiotherapist who arrived in Bangladesh in 1969 with Voluntary Service Overseas, and became aware of the severe difficulties experienced by disabled people in the country. Ten years later, Valerie founded the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed in Bangladesh. The CRP now has 100 in-patient beds, a mother and child unit, a hostel, integrated schooling for children with cerebral palsy, an independent living centre for disabled women, and outpatient services, and outpatient services. In the years since its founding the CRP has treated 50,000 patients.
Recent data indicates that 9% of the Bangladeshi population, or 16.5 million people, live with a disability. The Trust’s current campaign “Enable Hope” seeks to raise awareness in the UK of disability issues in Bangladesh, and engagement with the CRP.
Congratulations to the Trust on their fantastic work.
