Health Select Committee publishes report into PIP implants and regulation of cosmetic interventions

On 28 March 2012, the Health Select Committee, of which Valerie is a member, published its report into PIP implants and regulation of cosmetic intervention.

Valerie said:

“The Committee supports some of the actions the Government has taken in its immediate response to the health scare which emerged in December 2011.

“However, serious concerns remain about the sufficient availability of information on which regulators and clinicians are able to consult and make sound, evidence-based judgements. This has severe implications for patients who might not have access to quality professional advice and support.

“The NHS’ offer to replace implants which have failed is a welcome one, but there should be more robust obligations on private clinics to do the same so that everyone who is affected is properly safeguarded.

“The two reviews by Sir Bruce Keogh and Earl Howe, which were commissioned by the Government, present an opportunity for these issues to be taken forward with the co-operation of the General Medical Council and the Department of Health.”
