Valerie calls for more women engineers

Valerie met with representatives of the Royal Academy of Engineering on 6 September 2012 at the House of Commons.   

Valerie said:

“Following my Adjournment debate on Women and Science  I am keen to ensure that more women in the UK are pursuing careers in engineering and the sciences.  Fewer women going into engineering not only means that there is a reduced pool of talent.  Recent figures have shown that  the UK has the lowest proportion of female engineers of any country in the EU.  9% of British engineers are women compared to  Latvia,  where 30%  of engineers are female.

” The Royal Academy of Engineering are carrying out important work to encourage more women to become engineers. But we need to do more to ensure that women who would like to become engineers are encouraged at every stage of the education system and supported in a fulfilling career.
