Crime and Courts Bill Committee: Judicial Diversity

Valerie spoke about the diversity in the Judiciary clauses of the Crime and Courts in a Bill Committee.

Valerie said:

“It is promising that the Government is taking judicial diversity seriously. The issue of diversity on Attorney-General’s panel still needs to be addressed. Judges are ususally picked from the panel.The low fees involved can make it difficult for those to give up a good practise to go on the Panel.”

“When people talk about equality issues, they usually feel that standards are being lowered. What is more likely is that women or people from ethnic minorities are more qualified. The tipping point principle that the Government have introduced will progress diverstiy.”
