Valerie takes part in the Speaker’s delegation to Burma

From 28 July to 4 August 2013 Valerie took part in a cross-party Speaker’s delegation ona working visit to Burma led by the Speaker, the Rt Hon John Bercow MP.

Valerie said:

“I was very pleased to be able to travel to Burma as part of the cross-party delegation of MPs. Our visit marked the next stage of support by the House of Commons for Burma’s democratic journey.”

“I was honoured to by asked by Mr Speaker to take part in the visit as I have taken a particular interest in Burma since my election and have raised issues around Burma on numerous occasions in the House. Mr Speaker was determined to fulfil his promise made to Daw Suu when she spoke to both Houses last year to provide help to the Bumese Parliamentarians.”

“A highlight of the visit was meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. She is an inspiration. She has worked tirelessly and at great personal cost for 25 years to secure the same basic rights for the people of Burma that we in the UK take for granted. Daw Suu Kyi’s dedicated and courageous efforts have helped bring about the important progress seen in Burma over recent months, including the first free and open elections for a generation.”

“The delegation took part in a number of meetings at Naypyidaw (Parliament), with faith leaders  and community activists. The delegtion travelled to Mon State to see how aid can help communities.”

“There is still much progress to be made, but I hope that Burma will continue its journey towards democracy over the coming months and years.”
