On Thursday 6 February 2014, Valerie attended a Backbench Business Debate in the House of Commons on Scotland’s Place in the UK.
Valerie said:
“I was pleased that my colleague William Bain MP, Glasgow North East, was successful in his application for a Backbench Business Debate on Scottish independence. I attended the debate as an English MP because the issue of Scottish independence, which will be put to a referendum in Scotland on Thursday 18 September 2014, matters to all of us and not just those living in Scotland. Scotland is intrinsically linked to the rest of the UK economically, culturally, politically and socially. Scottish independence would be divisive at a time when it is more important than ever to unite.”
“The White Paper Plan for Independence published by the Scottish Government on Scotland after independence does not include costings for the policies listed. Nor does it say whether an independent Scotland would keep the pound. These are fundamental questions which have simply not been answered.”
“I support Alastair Darling MP, the leader of the No campaign and the Prime Minister in the campaign against independence and I hope that the people of Scotland will vote No in September.”
