I attended a launch event for the British Sign Language 999 app on Friday 17 June 2022 hosted by Action Deafness.
999 BSL is a new emergency video relay service for Deaf BSL users to contact the emergency services through a BSL interpreter for the first time. It can be used for free as an app on Android or Apple or through the website, and is available 24 hours a day throughout the year. The launch of the service on 17 June marks a very significant improvement in access to the emergency services for BSL-speakers among the 90,000 Deaf people in the UK.
The launch event was funded by SignHealth, a health and wellbeing charity organisation for the Deaf community which offers a crisis text line, domestic abuse support, psychological therapy, social care services.
