On Tuesday 20 April 2021, I attended an emergency meeting with the Leader of the Opposition following the announcement of the European Super League. We discussed what we could do to oppose the Super League with Malcolm Clarke, Chair of the Football Supporters Association.
The Super League is against the values of the game and I am pleased that all 6 English clubs have now withdrawn from it, following widespread opposition from football supporters.
HM Opposition have repeatedly called for the reform of the governance and finances of football. We have pledged to take action on this issue in our last four manifestos, going back to 2010. It is time to urgently examine the state of the game, its governance and regulation, its ownership rules and the support and funding of the clubs that are vital to local communities.
