Health Select Committee publishes Report on Government’s Alcohol Strategy

On Thursday 19 July 2012 the House of Commons Health Select Committee, of which Valerie is a member, published its report on the Government’s Alcohol Strategy.  After hearing evidence from a wide range of witnesses, the Committee recommended that for the Strategy to be effective it needs clearer objectives to provide a framework policy judgments and accountability. The Committee made recommendations on minimum alcohol unit prices, industry advertising and local responses to alcohol misuse.

Valerie Vaz MP said:

“The health impact of chronic alcohol misuse is in our view also significant and greater emphasis needs to be placed on addressing that impact. However the main focus of the Strategy is binge drinking and the consequences of anti-social behaviour and public disorder. Also, it has been shown that specialist Alcohol Nurses provide an invaluable service and they should be retained.”
