Sale of Public Land must give access to public spaces

On Wednesday 13 June 2012, Valerie Vaz MP asked the Minister about access to public spaces at Cabinet Office oral questions.

Valerie said:

“ The Cabinet Office has overseen the sale of 250 freeholds of the nation’s buildings and land, often to private firms.

“There have been reports that public access to these areas has been restricted by the landowners. For example, there are stories that access to some viewing areas for Queen’s diamond jubilee river pageant were restricted to wristband-wearing guests and enforced by security guards.

“I asked the Minister to ensure that there is a covenant in the conveyancing to ensure that the public have access to public land if the Government continues to sell off public land. ”
