I was delighted to attend a moving event in Speaker’s House on Monday 26 November 2018 to mark the passing into law of the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018.
I have previously raised the Bill at Business Questions on behalf of my colleague Steve Reed MP. The reforms known as “Seni’s law” in memory of Olaseni Lewis, who died in September 2010 after being restrained by 11 police officers, crucially restrict the use of force against mental health patients.
At the celebratory event, we heard from the Speaker. I am so proud of Steve Reed MP and his constituents for having the strength to push this through Parliament. I commend Seni’s parents and family who out of the depths of despair have helped to change the way that people with mental health problems are treated in the future.
