I was granted an emergency debate (Standing Order No. 24) on Monday 17 July 2017. An emergency debate is a debate called at short notice in the House of Commons when a matter needs to be discussed urgently. Here is my speech:
Last week following the Taylor review, the Prime Minister said that “through debate and discussion - the hallmarks of our Parliamentary democracy - ideas can be clarified and improved and a better way forward found’.
When I attended the Summer Reading Challenge event in Parliament, I met with Anne Sarrag the Head of Children's Reading at The Reading Agency and requested books to give to Old Church Primary School for their 'Party on the Playground' event.
I had a discussion with Whitehall Junior School Council on 14 July 2017 - a group of elected children across the pupils' community, with each class having a School Council representative.
I called for an emergency debate in Parliament to be held on Monday 17 July on the lack of Commons business under the rules of Standing Order No. 24 (SO24). SO24 is a rule that allows an MP to ask the Speaker to allow time for an emergency debate on a particular topic. Below is my speech:
