At an Urgent Question on 6 September 2022, the Environment Secretary was asked to make a statement on sewage outflows into waterways and onto beaches.
Over the last six years, there has been over 1 million sewage discharge spill events. Under the Government’s plans, this will be allowed to continue until 2035. This is unacceptable and water companies must be held to account.
I asked the Minister:
“Will the Minister consider making it a strict liability offence to dump sewage anywhere and give the Environment Agency more immediate powers, such as cease and desist, because clearly it is being ignored?”
