I attended an event at Parliament on 27 February 2019 to support the Fairtrade Fortnight campaign in raising awareness of Fairtrade producers and understanding the difference that Fairtrade can make to people’s lives.
I meet with Fairtrade activists from the Fairtrade Foundation who explained how the Commonwealth could boost fair trade.
Fairtrade can help protect farmers from market volatility and extreme poverty through the safety net of the Fairtrade Minimum Price, and the Fairtrade Premium money that goes directly to the farmers’ co-operatives and their communities. This ensures that workers receive a stable living income to support themselves and their families.
It is easy to buy Fairtrade. There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products from coffee and tea to flowers and cotton. Products are clearly marked with the Fairtrade logo, and in buying them you are ensuring the producers of these products are being paid a fair price for their work.
