Valerie attends Foodbank Collection

On Friday 4 July 2014, Valerie attended a foodbank collection at the Tesco Extra Store on Wisemore in collaboration with the Trussell Trust and FareShare.

Valerie said:

“I was pleased to be able to lend my support to the three day foodbank collection organised by Tesco in conjunction with the Trussell Trust and FareShare from 3 to 5 July 2014. The collection at the Tesco Extra Store on Wisemore was organised by the store’s Better Service Manager, Nikki Jennings who told me that they had already filled three cages of food when I visited. Tesco adding an extra 30% to all donations received. I would like to congratulate Tesco, its staff and its customers on their generosity.”

“The Trussell Trust and FareShare do great work in combatting food poverty and I am very pleased that Tesco is supporting their initiative. In 2013-14 the Trussell Trust alone gave emergency packs containing 3 days’ worth of food to 913,000 people, up from 346,000 the previous year. FareShare will redistribute the food it receives from the collection to over 1,296 charities and community projects across the UK.”

“People in need are referred to the Trussell Trust by frontline care professionals such as doctors and social workers. Some of the most common reasons for people to be referred to foodbanks include benefit delays, low incomes and benefit changes.”

“In 2013 Tesco organised a foodbank collection in its stores it was able to provide 4.3 million meals for people in need. This is clearly a very worthwhile initiative which is benefiting many of the most in need and I hope Tesco will repeat it.”
