On Wednesday, 4 March 2020 I joined the This Girl Can team in Parliament to celebrate International Women’s Day, and talked to Sport England about what more could be done to support women to be active in Walsall South and across England.
I am delighted to support Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to get more women and girls active. There are record numbers of women playing sport. I am pleased the new adverts show a variety of activities that can be enjoyed at any stage of life, regardless of age, ability or experience, and tackling some of the perceptions that social media gives women about being active.
Sport England first launched the campaign in 2015 in response to fewer women than men being regularly active – despite 75 per cent saying they would like to do more. I urge local groups and organisations – not just sports clubs, but any community groups who work with women and want to arrange activities or classes to encourage women in Walsall South to sign up with This Girl Can at www.thisgirlcan.co.uk to access a range of free resources.
