I supported an amendment to the Animal Welfare act to protect animals in the Police force from attackers claiming self-defence on 8 February 2019.
Police dog Finn saved the life of his handler in 2016, but was severely injured from the attack. The amendment, dubbed ‘Finn’s Law’, will protect service dogs and horses from injury by removing the excuse of self-defence to be given by attackers and increasing the maximum sentence for injuring a service animal to five years.
Finn the Police dog watched from the Gallery as the final reading of the bill was passed unanimously. I also had the pleasure of meeting Finn after the bill was passed.
