On Wednesday 4 March 2015 Valerie was presented with a commemorative shield made in Bethlehem from olive wood by the General Union of Palestinian Students for voting in favour of recognising the state of Palestine in a debate in the House of Commons.
Valerie said:
“In October 2014 I voted for the motion to recognise Palestine as a state. I was pleased that the motion passed 274 votes to 12. A number of my constituents contacted me about this issue.”
“I met with the Palestinian students in Parliament. They had brought a letter of thanks from the Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.”
“The General Union of Palestinian Students represents hundreds of students from the West Bank and Gaza studying at British universities. The students I met with told me how much encouragement and hope Parliament’s vote gave to Palestinians.”
