Valerie supports UK Youth Rocketry Challenge 2018

I supported the UK Youth Rocketry Challenge 2018 on Monday 5 February. The Challenge is aimed at students aged 11 – 18 from any secondary schools, colleges, educational facilities or youth groups to design, build and launch a model rocket. The Challenge is an exciting way for students to apply what they have learnt in science, technology, engineering and maths and gain highly valued skills.

I am pictured above with Nic Dakin MP and 1st place winners from Sweyne Park School who won the national heats in 2017 and then took on America and Japan in the international competition. The UK’s space sector is growing fast and is in need of enthusiastic people to fill thousands of new jobs every year. Space technology affects almost every part of our lives from farming to fundamental physics.

I spoke to Portia Bowman (below) from UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS) about a project called SpaceCareers.uk which was launched on 15 December 2015, the day of astronaut Tim Peake’s launch. SpaceCareers.uk provides a number of jobs and career advice into the space industry.
