On Friday 19 January 2018 I visited Hillary Primary School. I met with the Headteacher Ms Cherry and the School Council.
The School Council asked me questions about campaigns and my role in Parliament.
I told the students how as the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons I am a member of the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet responsible for working with the Leader of the House in arranging Commons business and holding the Government to account in its overall management of the House. I also respond to the Leader’s Business Statement each Thursday which gives me an opportunity to ask for debates and statements in the House of Commons.
As Member of Parliament for Walsall South, last year I have had contact with over 20,000 constituents since I was elected in 2010. This includes responding to both policy and casework. I told the students that I hold regular surgeries in the constituency to help my constituents with their individual cases.
I gave the students a present of a ruler with MPs on it and two books of jokes.
