On Friday 12 July 2013, Valerie voted for a motion that requires the Government to have the explicit prior consent of Parliament before the UK can provide more than non-lethal support to anti-governmental forces in Syria. The motion passed 114 votes to 1.
Valerie said:
“The situation unfolding in Syria is complex. It is right that the Government should require the consent of Parliament before carrying out actions such as arming Syrian rebel forces. Decisions such as these should be debated and it is important that there is parliament scrutinises decisions such as this. I am pleased that the Government is providng humanitarian aid to the Syrian refugees who find themselves caught up in the sitaution and are currently living in Jordan. It is important for all parties to enter into a dialogue.”
