Valerie takes a keen interest in the status of science in education and funding for science at our universities, herself being a science graduate with a degree in Biochemisty. Therefore she was pleased to meet BBC Young Scientist of the Year Tom Hearing who was at the House of Commons during filming for a BBC science programme due to be broadcast in March.
Tom’s winning project measures erosion on the Jurassic Coast in Dorest. He used special GPS technology to track past coastal erosion, and aims to predict where future erosion will be. Tom hopes to return to the same site in several years to compare the changes in the coastline. Tom is currently studying Mathematics, Physics and Geography for A level, and hopes to read Earth Sciences at Oxford University.
